Sudbury Arts Council and Sudbury Music Festival congratulates this year’s exceptional participants who represented the community at the 2025 Ontario Music Festivals Association (OMFA) Provincial Competition, held June 9 to 14t in the Kitchener-Waterloo region.
Sudbury students showcased their talents across a wide range of musical disciplines including classical guitar, piano, strings, voice, musical theatre, percussion, and various ensembles. Several earned top honours, including first-place finishes in both solo and group categories.
In Classical Guitar, Yongxing Li earned 1st Place in the Adults (Ages 29+) category, while Vishnu Krishnan Nair also took 1st Place in Level 5. Mason St. Amant received 2nd Place in Level 1, Noah Smilek took 2nd Place in Level 7, and Jaden Harrison was awarded an Honourable Mention in the Open category.
In Classical Piano, Anastasia Presenza earned 3rd Place in Level 4, and Sonya Rowson received an Honourable Mention in Level 1. Classical Strings participants also impressed: Junyi Wang placed 3rd in Upper Strings Level 1, Selena Le and Yvonne Gao both received Honourable Mentions in Upper Strings Levels 5 and 6 respectively, and Sarah Lian was a Playoff Finalist and 3rd Place winner in Upper Strings Level 9. Veronika Felhaber earned 2nd Place in Lower Strings Level 1.
In Classical Voice, Ethan Heimonen received an Honourable Mention in the Senior Level (Ages 17–18), while in Percussion, Gavin Wong achieved 1st Place in the Senior Level (Ages 17–18).
Sudbury’s ensembles also shone at the provincial level. The Jazz Sudbury Youth Band earned 1st Place in the Community Jazz Bands category (Ages 19+), and the Lockerby Composite School Wind Ensemble received an Honourable Mention in the High School Band category.
