It was interesting as heck today to do some research for a story on the fact so many Northern Ontario communities were represented as namesakes for ships in the Royal Canadian Navy back in the day. We are coming up on the 80th anniversary of the end of the Battle of the Atlantic, the longest and perhaps the most arduous battle of the Second World War. More than 100 new ships were created for the Canadian Navy which battled the Nazi submarine menace in the North Atlantic. Many of them were named for Northern cities and towns such as HMCS Copper Cliff and HMCS Sudbury (see the photos). I can barely imagine what it was like for Canadian sailors who hunted and fought against Nazi U-Boats in those horrible conditions. Canadian Corvettes were also featured in the 2021 Hollywood movie Greyhound, starring Tom Hanks. Check out the movie trailers; it's worth a peek.
