On May 4 of this year, a wildfire broke out just south of Hwy 17, also referred to as the SouthWest Bypass, about 2km east of the Vermilion River. This was the first wildfire in the Sudbury area for 2025.

I am unaware of the cause, but I did find an old glass pop bottle.

The fire was put out completely the next day and I went and checked it out on May 8. Burnt area was mapped out by the MNR at 3.5 Ha/8.75 acres.

Although, I am sure that the fire was concerning and scary for the nearby residents at the time, post fire damage assessment reveals the damage was primarily limited to burning dry grass, leaves and brush, without any permanent damage to the affected forested area.

We all need to remember that we all have a responsibility to prevent and report wildfires so that they can be dealt with quickly and protect property values.

If you encounter a wildfire, call 310-FIRE (3473).
